If you check the guidelines from the milk banks about who can get milk from them (and the priority in which requests are filled), you'll see several things that may be of help, I think. Since this mom has her own milk readily available, that's even better!  Also check Mothering Magazine's article of about a year or two ago entitled "The Medicine in My Chest."  That'll be another good starting spot.

Subject: giving breastmilk to older child with health issues

I tried to do a search regarding this issue and wasn't sure if I was able to use 
the correct words to find what I was searching.
The situation is mother has a newborn (around 2-3 months of age).  Her older 
child (5 years old) has biliary atresia and a history of two liver transplants.  
Someone recently mentioned to her giving breastmilk to this older child.  Are 
there any articles or information for her and physicians to support benefits of 
breastmilk for this older child?
