I am wondering about these parents and the kenicterus issue. Did their Peds
see the baby within 2 days of discharge? I am finding many of our Peds are
letting the parents wait until 2 weeks. I am always telling the parents they
need a checkup within 2 days of discharge. Friday I was helping, a poor feeder,
who looked a little yellow to me. The parents stated the Pediatrician wanted
to see the baby in 2 weeks. I actually called this Ped and reported my
observations at the breast and suggested he see the baby in 2 days. He was fine
with that but could this be the REAL problem? Improper follow up? We already
have enough Peds who jump the gun and put a 3 day old under lights for a bili
of 11-12. Our ARNP Neos, when they see the full term babies who don't have
Peds yet, are famous for it along with a few Peds. I observed this baby, had Dad
looking and listening with me to train him, he was then able to know his baby
is a sluggish feeder. She rented a pump as a back up and she is to call over
the weekend to let us know how she is doing. Thank goodness her nurse called
me into the room! She was going home and I could just see where there could
have been real problems if she hadn't been seen.
