whether it might be possible to actually relactate under such
emergency conditions -- wacky thought eh, but one to keep in mind
perhaps, for a snowy day??? It's a weird idea in the absence of
caloric intake, to generate only output (mother's milk) to sustain
life. It would be essentially eating yourself, but since kids
probably need more calories, I guess it's a way to share around total
energy among the family better.

Dear friends,

I think emergency situations are *the* opportunity to relactate if one is not lactating at the moment. The determination to feed and save one's child will probably enough of a mental kick-off to start teh breast working.
About the nutritional needs of mother vs her children. Adults only need to sustain what they have (and many have more than they need), children are growing and developping. Therefor an adult is much more capable to go withou food for extended periods of time (when water is available, which surely is the case in a snowy landscape), than children. Ofcourse being without food for days or weeks is not pleasant nor very healthy for an adult, it is not such a disaster as it is for small children.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands where winter is not planning to come any time soo as it seems.
