I am currently working in a great Level 3 NICU where breastfeeding is the
norm. I'm on our breastfeeding task force and one of my concerns regards
moms re-using their storage bottles. They are given instructions on
"sterilizing" the bottles at home and can then re-fill them. It is the only
NICU where I've worked where new bottles weren't used with each pumping. My
concern is infection control since we can't verify if cleaning procedures
are followed. Please remember that these are sick, comprimised babies. Can
you please share what is done in your NICUs and any breastmilk
pumping/storage policies you have. Also, who pays for the storage
containers? Moms? Hospital?Donated? I can be e-mailed privately at

Thanks so much, Dawn Staudt-Vanek, RN, BSN, (due to re-certify next year
IBCLC)
