My home born second baby was on my breast BEFORE she had a chance to
cry. She was born, coughed once, our midwife Jeanette wiped her face, I
picked her up, she opened her mouth to cry, I put her to the breast, and
she decided that sucking was far superior to crying.

I delivered her in a squatting position, and didn't even bother sitting
down until after she was latched. (Then a minute or two later I had to
squat back up to deliver the placenta. Jeanette was shocked when I said
"time for the placenta", and barely got the bowl in place in time!)

If her brother hadn't been born by C-section and kept away from me for 4
hours, I might not have been quite that fast, but I wasn't taking any
chances that anyone else was going to get their hands on her! I really
felt like a dog with a bone - growl, back off, I mean it, MINE!
