In reply to Diane W.'s musing about what people generally try to control during babyhood, I have always been amused by the fact that, for the most part (with the normal average child), no one really worries about whether a child will be motivated and succeed at learning to walk even while agonizing and worrying about a host of other skills and abilities at the very same time (eating, sleeping, toileting, weaning, separation--all of which people seem to worry might never happen).

No one props up a child at 1 month or sees them trip a few extra times and despairs that they will have permanent walking dysfunction, nor do decide the child "doesn't like it" or would be just as happy using a wheelchair. There are concerns if it starts to go "too long" but not a worry that the child will be totally unable. I also don't see much in the way of intensive PT for the normal child if a few months off.

Interestingly, I think this is a swing back away from over-reactive. I know I was in the stiffest most slippery shoes as a baby (straight last for a straight foot) and there was lots of concern about legs growing straight in the past. And that was when there was little concern over solids and infants npo (not fed) for 24 hrs.
