For three years I was the physical therapist on the cardiac surgery ward
of a local hospital.  Although I never had actual experience with a
breastfeeding mother undergoing cardiac surgery, there were plenty of
young patients, male and female.

It is true that the incision can be very painful for a while, though
this varies greatly from patient to patient, and can be fairly well
controlled by pain medictions.

The first few days can be difficult because of all the drains, lines,
IV's etc, however, I certainly can see the possibility of this mother
resuming breastfeeding within a couple of days. A 10 month old baby can
be tricky, because of the activity level. But if the mother  has
support, assistance, and patience I think it can work. Of course, I can
just imagine all the medical staff surrounding this would be very
resistant.

If the post-op course goes smoothly she can be up and walking 24 hours
post surgery. She may need to pump for a couple days, which could also
be difficult after the surgery.  However, for a 10 month old baby,
pumping for comfort only should be sufficient.

If the med's she taking are ok with breastfeeding and there a very
supportive people around, I don't see any reason to wean.
