Hello, my name is Jennifer Dukart and I am a student nurse at the
University of North Dakota. I have posted one message on Lact-net before
regarding alcohol and breastfeeding. I have another question regarding
this subject.

I have been researching this subject for my Nursing Research class. For
our class presentation, we are to present the research and develop a
protocol which could be implemented in a hospital. I have read the
research and understand the passage, metabolism and effects.

Our research group has developed a protocol, and I was wondering if any
of you could give me feedback on it, or tell me the protocol your
agencies use. We want to have a specific, clear protocol. Ours states:
"While breastfeeding, either completely avoid alcohol or consume 1-2
drinks occasionally. Avoid breastfeeding while consuming alcohol and for
1-2 hours per drink after consumption. If you need to pump during this
time frame do not give that milk to the baby. One drink= 12 oz of 4.5%
alcohol content (beer) or 4 oz of 12% alcohol content (wine) or 1.5 oz of
43% alcohol content (liquor) Occasionally: About once a week.

Our real question is defining occasionally. While studies show no harm
to babies who have less than 2 drinks daily, alcohol does inhibit the
milk ejection reflex. Therefore, wouldn't it be harmful to the mother's
milk supply if she drank daily? What is the safest, research based
protocol?

Thank you for your time and any comments you have!
