Fish lips was an old concept for identifying flanged lips. While we
don't want to see a baby suck in his lips, only the lower lip is really
flanged during a good deep latch. The upper lip is more neutral. A very
flanged upper lip usually means a shallow latch, and pain for mom.

Actually, I had not heard that concept. How I got to the "fish lips" analogy was this:
Several years ago, I was helping a mom in my office. When baby finally achieved a nice,
wide mouth, Dad came up close and said, "Let me see what that looks like, so I can help
her remember what to do when we're at home." He took a look, got a big smile on his face,
and said, "Well, that's easy! He looks just like a wide-mouth fish! I'll be able to
remember that." And it also seemed like a good description to me, so the idea stuck.
Most everyone here is familiar with the wide-mouth bass, so moms "get it" when I explain
it that way.
