Just got a message ( I haven't spoken with her yet)from a mother of a 10
month old. Mother has just been diagnosed with Lyme disease and is
starting a course of antibiotic treatment. The antibiotic compatibility
with breastfeeding is one issue (usually not a problem but I don't know
exactly which antibiotic she is on) but the other issue is the transfer of
the Lyme disease spirochete through the milk. In my references in my
office, I find a few variations in recommendations: Once mother is on
antibiotic it is ok to breastfeed; baby should be treated also; etc...
In my foggy memory, I seem to recall about a year or so ago a report
of 'the first case of Lyme disease being transferred via breastmilk???'
Can anyone help me locate the most recent references re this issue? I've
tried to navigate the CDC website but did not find anything re
breastfeeding and Lyme.

Thank you in advance
Debbie
