sorry I am a day late.
The milk is safe. contact with the blisters can transmit the virus. This is
not as serious with a healthy 4 mo old baby as it would be with a newborn or
a mom getting primary herpes during pg.
She can certainly continue to nurse on the unaffected side.
As to the affected side, if she can cover the lesions, and express the milk,
preferably by hand becoz the pump would contact the lesions, she can use
that milk. If she can cover the lesion and baby can nurse w/o contact, she
can nurse there.
I would advise her to take an antiviral like valtrex to shorten the
outbreak, and perhaps a topical antiviral as well made for herpes outbreaks.
Use very good handwashing technique and keep the lesions washed well with
soap and water and patted dry, and discard the paper towel or wash the towel
in hot water.
