Deena:

Although it seems plausible that the tongue tip would grow thereby making a
tongue-tie moot, the reality is that there is no research to support that
theory nor is there anything in the tongue morphology literature to support
such a contention. Waiting for a year can substantially compromise oro-motor
facial development and despite the fact that a baby is not speaking in an
understandable fashion, the oro-motor pattern that creates the articulation
errors is already in place.

There is good reason to do frenotomy even on a "borderline" tongue-tie and if
we begin to use a functional definition of tongue-tie for assessment
purposes these other funtional issues become very clear.

Sorry to be so adamant but tongue-tie is my great love, and failure to treat
when appropriate is my pet peeve.

Yours, Alison Hazelbaker, the still tongue-tied momma of two tongue-tied boys
(clipped), sister of a tongue-tied brother (not clipped), and aunt of a
tongue-tied nephew (clipped at 18 mos.).
