Jaye, this is where a good SLP or OT comes into play. Something is wrong
with this baby's sucking (weak lips/tongue, palate???) and we would call
this oral motor problems. I personally can not correct this myself but
have had several babies "cured" by a good SLP here. Sometimes CST is
enough, but usually not. I have not ever found that a tincture of time
cures this by itself unless the baby is a preemie with a weak suck. But
disorganized sucking that is not better by now needs an assessment by a
SLP or OT to find out what is really going on. I have seen this kind of
irregular pattern to sucking with the babies who were exposed to long or
overly strong epidurals in utero. Sometimes this type of sucking is very
vigorous looking but still doesn't transfer milk well.
Good luck, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
