Rob, this does sound like a baby who is very irritated at an over-active
letdown. GER certainly may be compounding this situation. As undefined as
colic is, I wouldn't expect the crying/screaming to only occur with feeding.
I presume that the mouth looks ok, no thrush or lesions. In the past,
Lactnetters have mentioned fractured clavicles also causing an infant to cry
with breastfeeding. Just some thoughts. This is a fine line to walk. You
don't want the mom feel like she is causing the crying by breastfeeding.
Good luck!!

Thank God I have an eager nursing preschooler to help me with this
situation! My 1 month old is happy to get on the breast and suck, but if
there's a lot of milk, he sure can get angry when it comes out faster than
he can deal with. Then he comes off crying, he's still hungry, and he knows
there's all this food to be had, but he just can't manage it. When my
preschooler is at preschool, I generally will pump first if I'm feeling
really full (since I'm trying to get a supply up for when I go back to work,
anyway). My 3 y/o is more *convenient* and pleasant, though!

Mari Douma, DO
