I have been reading with interest the recent posts regarding the
number of voidings in the first 24-48 hours. It certainly makes
sense that large numbers would be secondary to the baby getting
extra fluids via mom's labor IVs. We use the guideline that we want
to see at least as many wet diapers as baby is days old in the first
4-5 days, then the 6-8/24 hrs after that. When there are several
wet diapers in the first day or two the baby certainly will show a
greater weight "loss" from the artificially inflated birth weight if
s(he) has recieved extra fluid because of mom's IVs.
Now, while that makes sense, does anyone have any references to back
up it up? I would like to refer to this in an upcoming staff update
but hesitate to do so without being able to make it "evidence
based". I would appreciate any book citations or journal articles
that would validate this phenomenon. You can e-mail me at either
the address at the beginning of the post or my work address which is
"[log in to unmask]".
Thanks.
Winnie - (who is finally caught up after ILCA from all the
newspapers, e-mail, and of course videotapes of my 2 soaps.)
