Cathy, I have never seen a baby like this, thank God.   And since they report
his stools have always been like this it does sound more like an enzymatic
issue or something I guess.  But in particular your description of his "sad"
look and floppiness made me think of babies with botulism, who are nearly
always described exactly that way.   I have heard stories of very young
babies who basically contracted a botulism off of a stray bug on their
mother's skin; in fact I know of one similar case of a giardia infection,
where the mother showered in infected water and the baby apparently nursed
the parasite off of the nipple, a distressing thought.

 If you don't turn up another good explanation soon it might be worth testing
for these, even though they seem (are, really) rare in bf babies this age.

Good luck to you and them -- please do post an update on this baby when you
know more.
