I have permission to post this question from a client. This client adopted a
13 month old from a Russian orphanage over a year ago. Did not try to
breastfeed this child. Now has some attachment disorders going on per mom.
She is now trying to adopt another infant from Russia. Has been told that
the infant could be anywhere from 6 months to 15 months old. She states that
most of these babies are already off the bottle & drinking a little from a
cup and mostly eating solids. Would like to try to nurse this child, more to
avoid attachment problems than for nutrition. I have discussed ways to
induce lactation and supplementing at the breast. Discussed wearing the baby
in a sling and co-sleeping. Her question is has anyone ever worked with
getting an older infant or toddler to adoptive nurse and how successful have
you been in getting the infant to latch on. What helped in getting the
infant to the breast? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
