Breastfeeding Mothers Less Likely to Abuse Kids Strathearn L. 14th Intl.
Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect, Denver, CO, July 2002
Not sure if this has been published as an article - would do a medline search
for the author.

Conclusions:
nSurvey of 7,696 mothers
nBreastfed: None to > 6mo
nData collected over 14 years
n“The longer the mother breastfed her infant, the less likely her risk of being
reported for subsequent abuse.”
nBreastfeeding for < 4 mo was the STRONGEST predictor of whether infant would
have a substantiated report of neglect, physical abuse.
n“Through the process of breastfeeding, the mother is learning to be responsive
to the infant’s needs.

There is another, older study in the family practice literature from a single
office - don't have the ref on me at the moment.
