Ouch! I hope you weren't upset with me trying it out.

Unfortunately, we have lots of babies who spend hours in the nursery every
morning waiting for nursing and peds assessments. It always disturbs me to
hear the babies crying, so I was very excited when I watched your video. I
wanted to see if I could help some of these babies calm down, and also see
if I could teach the techniques to the moms. I can't control how long the
babies spend in the nursery (waiting for assessments), but I can soothe the
ones who are there.

Since gaining some initial success with the babies that morning, I have
begun to teach my moms with fussy babies how to calm them down. I couldn't
teach something that I hadn't tried first. I also practiced one-on-one with
the moms at our support group, and I have been recommending the book/video
to several of them.

I also wonder if this would have worked with drug addicted babies that we've
seen in the past. Those babies, as well as some others, can't go out with
their moms. One mom just didn't want her baby yesterday, so the 5 S's
worked great.

Disturbing, yes. Glad I have a way to help now, yes. Wishing I had more
arms, yes.

One good side is that the staff saw me calming a very upset baby down this
morning, and the nurse manager is very interested in learning the technique.

Thank you,
Joyce Coleman

This is a disturbing post. The babies should have been out with their
mothers breastfeeding. Truly disturbing.
