Barbara, et. al.

My concern with the sugar coated pacifier is not just the pacifier, but the
sugar. Do we not believe in the lactation community, based on sound
research, that a small amount of another food source, be it sugar, tea,
formula, whatever, can change the intestinal flora and breach the barrier
that colostrum provides by lining the gut, therefore allowing viruses to pass
through to the blood stream? Is this not why in resource poor areas,
exclusive breastfeeding is advocated to minimize the transmission of
HIV/AIDS? Do I have this wrong?

I am not one who says no formula, no glucose water ever. Of course, in the
absence of adequate breastmilk, the first rule is feed the baby. But if we
have an alternative, in this case topical anesthetics, why chance weakening
the immunological benefits of breastmilk?

Kim
