Well, now, I will beg to differ as to assertion that "there is NO SUCH THING
as a non-profit organization."

Some entities are organized to make money (e.g. by selling a product).
During the year, it costs money to make the product, to pay the workers and
executives at the company, to pay the electric bills and rent, etc. At
the end of fiscal year, the extra money is distributed to the company
shareholders. This is a simple description of a for-profit company.

Some entities are organized to accomplish certain goals (e.g. run a
school). During the year, it costs money to run the school, to pay
the teachers and custodians, to pay the electric bills and rent, etc. At
the end of the fiscal year, the extra money is plowed back into the
organization so that it can continue to pursue its goals. This is a simple
description of a non-proft, a.k.a. not-for-profit, organization.

Both kinds of entities can "die off" if there is not sufficient money to
operate them during the year. Many a profit-seeking entity finds itself
without profits at the end of the year (ask any private practice lactation
consultant how long it took to realize a profit after she hung her shingle
out). Many a not-for-profit entity has buckets of money at the end of year
(look at Harvard's endowment fund).

The for-profit/not-for-profit distinction comes in what motivates you to
make the extra moola .... and what you intend to do with it once you have
the extra moola.
