As I am always afraid that my sound sleeping husband will roll over on the
baby I put up a bed rail and put the baby between me and the bedrail.
However, one word of caution, my middle son fell between the bed and the bed
rail (very dangerous).  So now I put a towel or blankets to fill the gap
between the bed and the bed rail.  This has worked very well for me.
