Mary Belle states:
"I have been told that our hospital is unable to charge for
outpatient visits for lacation consults if seen only by an IBCLC."

The hospital I worked at had no problem billing as long as we had an
MD order for the consult. 2Only 2 of the 4 IBCLCs were also RNs.
We had no problem getting the orders. Doc's offices had a form with
all the billing codes that they could use and fax to us if they
wished, but in most cases, and in cases where we just had a phone
order or an order without the form, we simply used "newborn feeding
difficulties". That pretty much covers anything you might see. We
always used codes for the baby, not the mom. Apparantly, if the
problem it attributed to the mom, then it was more likely to be
considered "education" rather than "medically related" and thus
rejected by the insurance companies. Go figure! Anyway, you use
what works. Even though mom may present with sore nipples as the
main complaint, "feeding difficulties" could apply since most cases
are secondary to ineffective feeding of some sort, or at least the
soreness was interfering with feeding in some way.
