The "Tampon Safety and Research Act of 1997" is before Congress
NOW. This bill will require the National Institutes of Health to
determine health risks related to the use of tampons. These risks
include diseases related to DIOXIN exposure and tampon use, such
as ENDOMETRIOSIS, OVARIAN, CERVICAL AND BREAST CANCERS, IMMUNE
SYSTEM DEFICIENCIES, PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE, REDUCED FERTILITY,
ABNORMAL FETAL AND CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT, and TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME!

The bill is historic, because it refers directly to health risks
for humans related to environmental pollution by industry. It also
seeks to place the responsibility on government to investigate
these risks INDEPENDENTLY of research sponsored by the industry.
When successful, manufacturers will be held responsible for
product-related health and environmental damage.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY14) has introduced the "Tampon
Safety" bill to the House for the SECOND time! The going's been
tough, and Maloney needs lots of support to get the bill to hearings,
and then to a vote. In her remarks, Maloney stated, "Mr. Speaker,
I hope my colleagues will join me in this fight to get accurate
health information to the women of America. Their future fertility,
and perhaps their lives, may depend on it."

PLEASE -- send this information around to anyone that you know who
could contact a Congressperson or Senator and demand that she/he
support the bill. They should also request that they receive a
written response, and follow ups to any action taken.

And it's working!!! Maloney's office contacted us to say that
Senator Patrick Kennedy has stepped forward to support the bill
after receiving calls from his constituents!

BTW, have you or someone you know experienced health problems
related to using tampons? Rep. Maloney is collecting this information
- send your story to her! And to us!!

It will also really help to Contact Representative Maloney's office to
support her work directly. Contact her offices at:
