Carol, the Norwegian reference for medications and breastfeeding says
'mother can breastfeed 24 hours after taking it'.
In the info provided by the manufacturer(s) it seems it is minimally
protein-bound so free serum levels are high. Half-life is under 2 hours and
after 12 hours, the drug is 90% gone, excreted mainly via kidneys. It is
used on infants when necessary, and from the age of 2 years, metabolism is
as for adults. The manufacturers info about breastfeedind says that the
physician should be consulted to determine whether breastfeeding may
continue uninterrupted or should be stopped for up to 24 hours.
Given the age of the child in question I would expect a more liberal
approach, and 48 hours is twice the wait mentioned in any of the sources I
have checked here. Sounds like a doctor who is overly cautious about
medications but not concerned enough about how to handle the child in the
interim :-)
Caveat: I don't know a thing about the mother's medical history, including
why she needs an MRI. There may well be factors that affect how rapidly
this particular woman clears the gadolinium from her body.
