A couple of years ago, we went to the "pumping within the first hour after 
birth" if the baby was unable (or clueless) and I have to say, we have had 
very positive results with this approach. 

It also gives the mother a head start (if necessary) and it has definitely clued 
in the nurses more to the necessity of frequent feeds. 

Also, with longer more drawn out problems, at least the milk supplies of these 
mothers who get pumping early and frequently do not suffer from insufficient 
supply when the baby is finaly ready, willing, and/or able to finally go to 
breast and be effective.
