It's been a long time since I posted, so many of you won't recognize me. Have a mom with a persistent problem with a plugged duct or pore. We've tried all the known interventions with no success, so decided to tap your collective wisdom and see if any one can give a suggestion. The problem has been ongoing (though not a painful, incapacitating situation) for 6 months. The last 3 weeks it has become more intolerable for her, and last week she had bleeding from the site when pumping at work. The pain is limited to the face of the nipple, and more intense at the start of a feeding. Went to the Dr. today, she stated she had never seen anything like it and felt time would resolve the problem. No sign of infection, by the way. Mom has been using moist heat and attempts to remove the white plug when it flares up, but has now decided to just leave it be. Wants to know if there is anything else she can do. When she told the Dr. she would be seeing me this weekend, the Dr. asked that she share any remedies with her. She is very breastfeeding friendly and wants to be able to help any other patients who present with this kind of problem. Mom states that site is more painful with nursing than pumping; this is also the side that baby occasionally bites (he is 10 months old now). She has no plans to stop nursing, states situation is tolerable, but would really like to resolve this if possible. Should mention that the mom is my dear daughter, who thinks her mother has the answer to any breastfeeding problem. I hope someone out there can help me retain that trust she has in me.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
