If I remember correctly, Jack Newman uses glucose as a "colostrum extender".
So he uses it only in the colostrum phase to slightly increase the volume if
necessary.

Loraine makes a very interesting point - the assumption that an unsettled
newborn *must* be hungry! He is given a large bolus of formula and goes to
sleep - thus "confirming" the assumption.

Where I work, supplements are most often given during the second night -
because baby is a "hungry bunny". If I manage to to do a little
anticipatory guidance beforehand, mothers often choose to keep their babies
with them - often snuggled next to them in bed and they have a relatively
peaceful night.

Despite what seems like daily uphill battles at the hospital - today I am
smiling. Two babies self-attached in labour ward. We have one midwife who
often tries to facilitate this. She is so excited today so will hopefully
be motivated to keep going.
