I'm not sure if Arabic parents in general share sleep but I do know that 
they are VERY family oriented, and the fathers REALLY take a much larger 
role in the family than American fathers.  I know in the Muslim faith, 
mothers are asked in the Quran to breastfeed their babies for 2 years. 

Maybe Americans don't share sleep because maybe having enough rooms in 
your house was once a status symbol, so that everyone could get their 
own room and nobody HAD to share sleep.  I think of elderly patients 
telling me that they grew up with 12 kids in a house that was only 1000 
square feet... that sort of thing.
