I have already clearly stated my conviction that the observation and
evaluation of a breastfeeding by an IBCLC should include a weight check -
this is not the ONLY item but a very important item - as long as the scale
is an EXCELLENT one,

Jeannette, do you mean to say that any IBCLC that does not do weight checks is not a good IBCLC? If that is so, I have to not agree with you. I am a IBCLC for 14 years now and have never, not once, used a scale of any sort in any situation. And I certainly do not feel that I did not do a good job, nor did my cllients. Perhaps my clients are very different from yours or perhaps I developped other skills that enable me to evaluate infant growth and development. I cannot recall any situation where I may have wished that I had a scale at hand.
If a baby grows and thrives he gets enough to eat, if he is not growing or not thriving he may not be getting enough to eat or there may be a problem in processing his food. Ba'bies may eat well and process adequate amounts of food and still not grow and thrive. A scale will not tell what baby does with the food he gets.

I wonder if the differences in how IBCLCs think about the use of scales could have a link with our backgrounds: do IBCLCs who were in healthcare before becoming an IBCLC use more scales than those of us who originate from the lay breastfeeding fields, like LLLleaders?
