Thought you all would get a kick out of this:
I received a call today-in the middle of several things going on at
once-from a woman wanting to know if i was still with La Leche League, and
did I have time to answer a quick question. She had been parked in a
handicapped space-legally-annd a police officer came over to inspect her
sticker and observed her breastfeeding her 3-week-old in the car. She was
discreet, not exposed. He informed her that she could not do that her, anbd
when she said she would only be 10 minutes and then she could get the baby
home, he replied that if she didn't leave immediately, it could become an
incident and she could be charged with disturbing the peace. (please note
that I an refraining from commenting, which is really hard) As he had
insisted that she leave, she left-and drove directly to the police station
where she complained. She noticed that the offending police officers' name
was not written down. Then she called me to ask if the guy was correct. I
handled it as calmly as I could, trying not to comment too much on
infringement of civil rights and harrassment, and thought that would be the
end of it, but was later called by a reporter. It seems that in the course
of speaking to the nurse at the pediatrician's office, she mentioned this
incident, and the nurse was so upset that she suggested that the newspaper be
called! So her story will appear tomorrow with a picture and comments from
me! And she is going back to file a formal complaint and is thinking of
contacting a lawyer! I told her that she would be our heroine of the day,
and I was posting to over a 1,000 people.
On another note-if there is anyone with experience in induced lactation
for an adopted first baby, could you please e-mail me privately. I have been
in private practice 7 years, and an LLLleader for 12+, but I do not have very
extensive experience/luck with this topic, and I have a lovely mom that I
would like to help.

hurricane pass over us on Monday
