I agree with Katherine, this is not something to pick a fight over.  Power
struggles can prolong an activity and make a very strained and unpleasant
atmosphere.

My fourth was a finger-sucker (middle and ring fingers together, it looked
very odd).  My husband was sure the baby wasn't being nursed enough.  Just
to demonstrate that he was , I picked the baby up and nursed him, put him
down and the fingers went right back into his mouth.  He stopped on his own
before (if memory serves) two years.
