In 1974 at our local LLL meeting here in the Pacific Northwest US there was
a new mother, long time goat farmer, in attendance. She told our group
that she had frozen some of her own early milk still containing colostrum
due to her background as a goat farmer. What she did with mother goats,
doe/kid pairs, was to freeze some of each doe's colostrum. It was pair
specific-each kid had its own mother's supplement marked in her freezer. If
the kid showed any sign of sickness or weakness, she'd take out a frozen
colostrum cube (frozen in ice cube trays) and gently thaw one cube of its
own mother's colostrum and feed it back to the struggling kid. That was the
"medicine" to help it get well. Another's doe's colostrum could also work,
but its own mothers was preferred. Not artificial milks! That same
instruction is still in the "care and management of newborn (goat) kids"
online.

Gut closure: first time I heard of it was via author Doris Haire, founder
of the International Childbirth Education Association who wrote "Cultural
Warping of Childbirth" (1972). She mentions gut closure and not to give
newborns formula or sterile water at the hospital. Why a "little bit" of
formula still matters-it's an intervention, but no one is calling it that.

Feeding interventions are more serious today, as infant formulas contain
genetically modified ingredients. Hungarian biochemist Arpad Pusztai said
gmo potatoes devastated the developing immune system of his lab rats,
changing their gut lining. The only ethical practice is species specific
feeding of newborn humans.
