Sharon asks,

<< Jan,
I believe that in the research I have read that the epidural for a C-section
(short duration), and an epidural for labor (long duration usually) makes for
the difference in the newborn's ability to latch. In other words, the longer
the fetus is exposed to the epidural medications, the more of an impact the
medications have on the newborns suckling reflexes, sleepiness, motor
 coordination, etc.
Am I wrong, or is it short exposure to epidural medications as well?? >>

You are absolutely right -- at least clinically we don't usually see problems
with moms that have had an epidural in for a short time (under 3 hours).
Which may be one of the reasons that multips generally have less problems with
their babies bf -- they don't have the epidural in as long.
