Insurance pumping - I teach all of my moms to do insurance pumping, which is
pumping 2-3 times in 24 hours when a nipple shield is in use. It's
recommended so that a mom's milk supply is not compromised by the plastic of the shield
which dampens the stimulation. I have seen moms with ample supplies of milk
lose their volume dramatically when not advised to do insurance pumping. I
prefer to preserve a woman's supply during the use of a nipple shield than to
lose the supply and have to work on building it up again.

For those women with an ample supply of milk related to pumping due to an
inability to latch baby onto the breast prior to a consult, I still recommend
insurance pumping for reasons such as eliminating the occurence of plugged ducts
and mastitis.
