Laurie,
You are right. My next post to LACTNET acknowledged that the difference is
19 ozs. When I read your post, I did not realize that the 6-11 was the
lowest weight but thought it was the birth weight. Then I went through all
the math and came up with the lowest weight as 6 lbs even, probably on day
5, and a gain of 30 ozs in 30 days, which would have been great. Please
accept my apology for my mistake; I did not mean to sound as if I was
challenging you, just working with numbers.
I agree that by day 5 the volume of milk has usually increased and the baby
should start gaining. In my area, a 10% loss in the first 5 days is very
common for the reasons I gave (mismanagement of BF and bloated babies).
There may not be much research on the latter; I admit it is more anecdotal
on the part of RNs/IBCLCs I know in the area hospitals. I extend a peace
offering to you! :-)
Lee

Subject: wt gain 4 oz per week?

Lee,

I don't have the original post in front of me so it is hard for me to
respond to your challenges.
Going from 6#11 to 7#14 is a 19 oz gain in 30 days (I thought it was 5 wks).

This is an average gain of 4.4 oz per week or about 0.63 oz per day. If you
want to be very accurate, there it is. Again, I would not find this
reassuring. It *may* be a low normal gain, but in this particular case, as I

recall, this was not a steady, slow gaining baby.

I disagree with your assessment that "A 10% loss in the first 5 days is
common for a baby born in a hospital where breastfeeding management is poor
and/or the mom had a high IV load that
caused severe edema in the baby." Babies are generally home by day 2-4 and
mom should have copious milk by day 4 or 5 and the baby should be gaining.
The IV therapy/edema in baby situation, I believe, is a theory and I also
recall was shown not to be the case in at least one study.

I hope the new bf helpers on the list will consider both sides of this
'argument' carefully, and talk to several experienced consultants about how
they interpret the info and respond to it.
