After all the interesting discussion on products, an analogy occurred to
me..

If a woman buys a pair of shoes in a shoe store without checking the
size and ends up with sore feet, we wouldn't say: "No one should buy
shoes. They can cause pain while walking." Because we are used to the
idea of shoes being fitted to the person, we would say, "She didn't
check the fit first. It was a fit problem."

That was the point I was trying to make about breastfeeding products.

Of course, the analogy breaks down because pillows and other products
are not a normal part of our dress like shoes (although I'm sure there
are some parts of the world where shoes are not the norm, too). But
that's part of the point, too. Since breastfeeding is not really the
norm yet (at least where I live), the concept of a mother being "fitted"
to a pillow (or other product) is not widely understood. And therein
lies the problem.

Mothers (and their generous relatives) simply pull products off store
shelves and buy them with no thought to fit and no clue about how a bad
fit affects breastfeeding. Then when a mother has problems, they blame
it on breastfeeding.

Just a thought...
