I find that babies who have been on a breast shield for a lengthy period
of time are afraid of skin in their mouths. Skin is more flexible and much
softer than a shield and babies freak out when offered the nipple w/o the
shield. It is almost like they are afraid to suck correctly at the breast.
I don't know if it is fear of hurting mom or just not understanding that
milk comes from the nipple and not from the shield. I generally do a lot
of skin to skin, attempt latch after some finger sucking (to sensitize
them to skin in their mouths) and/or while they are sleepy.
