I offer advice similar to Pat's when discussing the one or two breasts per
feed issue. I've incorporate it into my "talk" when meeting with a mom for
the first time by saying, "Many babies are satisfied from one breast per
feeding in the first few weeks, baby's intake varies depending on a good
latch, how well they transfer the milk, their volume/calorie need, your
storage capacity and the number of feedings the baby gets every 24 hours.
You will know when and if you will need to offer the second breast at
feedings by your baby's response during a feeding. Put baby back on first
breast until he no longer will go back on that breast without getting fussy.
If he is fussy, try burping first, then relatch to the first breast, if he
won't go back to the first breast and still appears hungry, then offer the
second breast."

Still... can't get to all the staff at our hospital... turn over and travel
nurses... every day someone tells some patient that they need to nurse the
baby 12-15 minutes on each breast... course that's not the worse thing that
patients get told sometimes... I have taken to the direct approach and I go
directly to the source of the bad information...
