very often in LBW babies  we see this happen.  Mom has been pumping lots of
milk for several weeks, and therefore is producing perhaps more than her
baby needs.  when she puts him to the breast, he gets most of his meal on
lower calorie milk.  I usually recommend that these moms pump for a few
minutes before putting baby to the breast,and after the feed to give several
spoons of "cream" that she expresses after the feed.
Of course see that he is latching and sucking well.
In preemies, wet diapers is not a good enough wign of adequate feeding.  It
only indicates hydration, but not calorie input.
What is amazing is that as these babies reach the birth date, they start
sucking much better!!
