Hi Kristen,
I presented a poster at the USBC meeting in January on this with
Michelle Griswold from Connecticut. I worked at a clinic housed in a
midwifery practice, her clinic was in a pediatric office. And neither of
us have been able to use the other "patient's" billing code. Even if a
baby was severely tongue-tied, I had to bill for the effects on mom -
nipple pain, nipple sores, reduced milk supply, the generic "disorder of
lactation" - even though every one of those problems was caused by the
tongue tie. But I guess it's like a lot of other things - I mean, if a
patient has suffered from a workplace injury, you don't bill for "heavy
equipment malfunction", but rather for lacerations and fractures.
Our solution was just to work around it, and be very careful to only
bill for maternal codes (for me) or pediatric ones (for Michelle). Yes,
they are one in the same, but you have to treat the one patient who was
referred.
I only check the digest occasionally, so if you have specific comments
or questions for me, please also email me off-list.
