Heather,
I agree that formula has all along been one experiment after another but the
stakes are being raised a little higher. Why would a formula company tell
Baby Action the truth? Is Martek lying about their oils? Don't know but I
do have a copy of a study called "A randomized controlled trial of early
dietary supply of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and mental
development in term infants by Birch, Garfield, et al. from the Developmental
Medicine and Child Neurology 2000, 42: 174-181(by the way funding from Mead
Johnson) In this study single cell oils are used, specifically DHASCO and
ARASCO. Now if you go to the FDA and look at the GRAS notice for these items
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~rdb/opa-g007.html

ARASCO is derived from a soil fungus--crude oil--Mortierella alpina and
DHASCO is derived from a microalgal species Crypthecodinium cohinii. Now on
page 3(if you print this document out) it says, " we are particularly
concerned about toxicological effects that could derive from constitutuents
of the source microorganisms, which have no prior use as a source of food
ingredients...Some of these sterols may be novel sterols that are not present
in commonly consumed vegetable oils."
NO PRIOR USE AS A SOURCE OF FOOD INGREDIENTS...what does that mean?

Martek's Oil licenses with various fromula companies can be seen at
http://www.martekbio.com/dha.html

The intersting thing is that of course no one is saying the dirty word,
genetically engineered. They call it "new" or novel oils. But if you browse
the web with the search engine Yahoo and type in crypthecodinium cohinii or
Mortierella alpina you will quickly get the picture..genetically engineered.
Who monitors such things, its a new industry. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
