I had a mom with a slowish gaining baby who was schedule feeding and did
not want to change that. Her breasts could not keep up supply, so she was
pumping and pouring down the drain over a pint of milk a day to maintain
her supply. I'm afraid I visibly boggled. It was pre-IBCLC days, and I
blurted out, "Why don't you save yourself all that trouble and just nurse?"

And the dog: I used to have a sheltie. When my youngest was young enough
that I dripped milk all the way to the bathroom when I made midnight pit
stops, the dog would clean up after me and apparently developed a taste for
the good stuff. Shortly after my youngest weaned at about 5.5yo, one of
the kids got pinkeye. A friend expressed a couple ounces into a ziplock
bag for me, which I set for my convenience on the top of a dresser in the
bedroom. This must have been about four years after the dog had his last
taste of human milk. My well-behaved sheltie leaped up over that dresser,
grabbed the baggie on the way, and just kept on going. I could have safely
left a rare steak on the table, but not EBM!
