Susan,
Mylanta is used sometimes here as a treatment for reflux. I've had some
breastfeeding mothers find their babies improved a lot when they used it
along with some diet changes. Too bad that wasn't tried while mom was still
breastfeeding!!!! The symptoms do sound suspicious of reflux and/or food
intolerance.

Reflux is often improved when a food allergen is removed fromt the diet. If
mother wants to re-lactate she will probably need to change her diet to
eliminate milk & soy or medicate similarly. In the meantime, I would agree
that a hypoallergenic formula is sure worth a trial run. What could it hurt
to try it??? If she wants Dr. approval, seeing a GI specialist should help
get it.

For more quick reading and references, check out the LLLI pamphlet on reflux
(the author is involved in www.reflux.org), the AAP policy on hypoallergenic
formulas at the aap website, and IBCLC's learning module on GER. S Boekel
says in the learning module, "Some antacids contain high levels of sodium,
aluminum or other minerals and long term use should be with caution."
