A 10-month-old boy who was exclusively breastfed from birth (no artificial
nipples of any kind) has finally had the frenetomy he needed all along.
Mother is very experienced and committed to bf, and did what she needed to
do to help him compensate for the tongue-tie. Everyone agreed that he was
tongue-tied but no one would do the procedure. The family finally went to a
major city where an MD would do it. They hoped baby would begin nursing
competently after the procedure, but unfortunately he seems to be quite
confused by his new tongue mobility. He has not nursed since the procedure.
 He goes stiff and resists if brought near the breast. He refuses bottles
and nipple shields. Recommendations so far include: mom pumping to protect
her supply and also to provide expressed milk; offering cup feeding;
offering finger feeding; tongue exercises (as described in the Breastfeeding
Answer Book); plenty of skin-to-skin, cobathing, snuggling, etc.; playing
mimicking games with baby to get him to stick out tongue; encouraging
mouthing, licking, or chewing, to familiarize him with the new feelings.

Any suggestions for ways to get this baby back to the breast would be very
much appreciated!

Margaret
