"Yes, why bother? Why SHOULD I spend time and money getting a degree from
UIU in this
field?
Someone please tell me what value that'll have if I can't even use it.

Kim Lenderts"

Because Kim - with a degree, MA or PhD in lactation you can call yourself
what you want, and practice as you please, without a silly SoP to screw you up!

Seriously, I am in the begining stages of the UIU MA program, and I was just
thinking, that at least I can hang out my shingle as a Lactation Consultant
(no one seems to know the difference in Nashville between IBCLC, CLE, LLLL,
etc, and quite honestly, the difference has more to do with the person and
their individual experiences and training than their letters) and after a
Masters Level program and years of LLL work, I know I am more than qualified
and able to help mothers in a variety of situations. I am qualified and able
now as a LLLL and CLE for many many situations that I help with every day. I
am a bonafied lactation nerd.I go to CEU/Cerp sessions for FUN. I don't need
letters after my name to prove what I know. I do it for my own personal
satisfaction and to let others know that I have gone to the trouble of
professional training.

Anyway, I am not yet an IBCLC, and it is in my "plan" but if this SoP
doesn't change, I may be changing my plan. I would rather go to the PhD
level than be IBCLC and have ridiculous restrictions.

However, I will say, that as a LLLL I do not see the problem with giving
mothers information that may or may not contridict what their health team
says. Just a few weeks ago, I gave the mother other options outside of what
the pediatrician and hospital LC both said. I told her however, that she was
the expert on her baby and should do as she saw fit. That is what I always
do. I never tell the mom and dad what to do. They make the choices.

I guess IBLCE will have to recinde this SoP or will be flooded with calls of
complaints on LCs who used to just be doing their job and are now breaking
code!

Here's hoping this gets worked out,
Micky
