I know this is the subject of some debate, but I am quite convinced 
that if mom's iron stores aren't optimal, her milk may not contain as 
much as it might, so she ought to either check hemoglobin or serum 
ferritin and take appropriate action.

Also, there are lots of iron options besides those horrible drops.  
Ferrochel or some other form of iron that isn't constipating would keep 
both doc and mom happy.
