Hi Lactnetters (Dr. Hale?)

I have a question about the safety of the Topical Cream 5% Efudex. According
to 'Drugs in Pregancy and Lactation - A Regerence Guide to Fetal and Neonatal
Risk' by Briggs, Freeman and Yaffe, Efudex (not the topical cream) is known
as Fluorouracil.

Fluorouracil is listed in this book and in Dr. Hale's book as a potent
antineoplastic agent used for therapy in various carcinomas. No data is
available on its transfer into breastmilk. Dr. Hale says it's not
recommended for breastfeeding mothers. Briggs says no data are available for
breastfeeding.

This mother was prescribed this cream to apply to a wart on the sole of her
foot. She is breastfeeding a toddler. She has discontinued its use but was
told the drug would stay in her system for up to a month. Would this also be
true for the topical cream? Naturally she wants to continue breastfeeding,
and is now worried....

TIA for any replies.
