I would see the first pumping get more milk than the next several enough times that I made it part of my teaching.  When a mom would be pumping for a NICU baby, I would tell her that often times the first pumping gets more milk than the next several.  I described it as being because some milk had accumulated during tha days before baby's arrival and the next pumpings would "remind" the breasts to kick into full production even if there wasn't a lot of volume.  Maybe not precisely accurate, but in terms moms could easily comprehend.  It was the ones who weren't informed that this change in volume would be normal that would get discouraged and either give up or think that by going longer between pumpings she would "get more".
