This raises the question for me about older nurslings, do other mothers
experience what I do with this "forgetfulness?"

my experience - as usual - seems not to be the norm ! my 1st 2 each
nursed until 5. my 1st son nursed alone until 17 mos, then nursed side
by side w/ his new little brother until he turned 5 and announced he
was ready to wean. then i nursed the 2nd son who was 3 alongside our
3rd, who was newborn. 15 mos later i was nursing the two of them along
with another newborn, our daughter. the 2nd son followed in his big
brother's footsteps and chose to wean at 5. at that point they'd both
been asking to nurse about once every few wks and yes !! they'd
totally forgotten how to latch, suck and transfer milk. thanks be they
only pursed their lips briefly around the 'nibble' (as they are called
here) and pretended to get milk instantly, as i couldn't stand the non-
nutritive suckling.

son # 3 began a weaning pattern much earlier, before 3. by 3 he was
asking once every few weeks and declining when offered any other time.
he now asks a little more frequently since the new baby and his
younger sister nurse very often, but it's the same story - a brief
'kiss' of the nibble, he claims to have gotten wonderful milkies that
variously taste of bananas, pudding or ice cream and he walks off,
evidently very satisfied w/ himself and his supersonic turbo powered
nursing speed. i don't think his weaning had anything to do w/ spacing
or pregnancies b/c it was pretty much the same time frame from him to
the next sib as it was w/ my 1st two (17 mos and 15 mos apart,
respectively). i think w/ him it was just more identifying w/ his
bigger bros and being a more independent personality. also this one
has always been more bonded w/ his father. even as a very tiny infant,
he nursed from me and then squirmed and fussed until his father took
him and comforted him to sleep. never once in his life do i recall him
nursing to sleep on me! if his father wasn't home, he would nurse to
glassy eyed exhaustion and then roll off me to the nearest papi spot,
be it couch or side of the bed. to this day, when my husband is out of
town, he retreats to his father's favorite couch to fall asleep and
tells me i can't sit there with him ! he's always kept his nursing
very much on professional terms with me, this one - i've not yet met
another like him ! if his father would have lactated for him, i'm sure
i would have been fired by dear son #3.

i am curious to see how long the last 2 nurse and i hope to encourage
it to be as long as the 1st two if not longer as these are the ones w/
the severe food allergies.

~who just put a 'save the tatas' breast cancer bumper magnet on her
vehicle next to the 'human milk for human babies' one and just above
the 'LACT84M' plates and thought it would be great fun to take a poll
of what other Lactnetters have on their vehicles !~
